CAREER AT RADIO 1 DLT began his radio career at Radio Caroline North . His Radio 1 career began in 1968 , presenting a Sunday morning show from 10am-midday. In 1971 , he took over the weekday lunchtime show from 11am-1pm, moving back to Sunday mornings in 1973 & also presented the ''Radio 1 Club'' on Thursdays from 5-7pm. In 1975 he took over the weekday teatime slot from 4.30-5.45pm (extended to run 4.30-7pm in 1977 ). He then took over the Breakfast Show from Noel Edmonds in May 1978 to December 1980 , and also presented episodes of '' Top Of The Pops '' in the 1970s and 1980s . January 1981 saw Travis move to weekday afternoons from 2.30-4.30 pm. Later that year he moved back to the weekday lunchtime slot from 11.30am-2pm, before moving to a Saturday morning show in 1983 from 10am-1pm, then Sunday mornings from 10am-1pm in 1987 taking over both Saturday & Sunday in September 1988 . He occasionally got a fit of the giggles on his show. A fine example was when during his Treble Top quiz in 1989 When he asked the Question 'Which Instrument does the leader of a symphony Orchestra play'? The Contestant answered 'A Baton' DLT Burst out laughing and was unable to carry on with the quiz for about 5 minutes even asking a member of his production team to continue with the remainder of Quiz. He was famously 'gotchered' by his former Radio 1 colleague Noel Edmonds on the latter's Saturday Night TV show Noel's House Party during a phone-in quiz section of his radio show.Travis' explosive and profane reactions towards Edmonds afterwards were caught on video;very luckily they were not broadcast over the airwaves or he may have got into considerable trouble! The said videotape has sometimes turned up on other TV programmes, with the offending obscenities bleeped out. DLT Recalled the incident on Jeremy Beadle's Greatest Celebrity Stitch-ups on Channel 4 in 2005. Remembering how Noel caught him out he said: "What that bugger did was in the studio that I was working at at Radio 1 they had slipped in there a piece of Black wood with patterns of circular shiny plastic of which one was the lens. And they put it in there six weeks before they did the gag on me just so that I wouldn't see anything unusual on the day they did it". Questions used in the gotcha: DLT: 'What does the French word Pomme mean?' Contestant: 'Aussie' DLT: 'Which part of the body is objected to a stigmatism?' Contestant: 'The Joints' DLT: 'What is a male honey bee called'? Contestant: 'Bumble' RESIGNED ON-AIR In 1993 he famously resigned on-air during his Sunday morning show, stating that he could not agree with changes that were being made against his principles. He offered his services to Radio 2 , who declined as they said they had no need for a hairy cornflake. He was replaced briefly by Nicky Campbell and Claire Sturgess , and then by Danny Baker . However, he continued to host shows on the BBC World Service until 2002. SINCE 1993 In the 1990s and early 2000s he worked for the oldies station Classic Gold . DLT now lives with his wife on a small farm in Buckinghamshire & presents a Saturday morning show on Spain's Spectrum FM between 9am and Midday, as well as a Sunday morning show from 9am-midday on BBC Three Counties Radio , DLT's local radio station. He has also recently become a father for the ninth time, with the birth of his son, DLT Junior. EXTERNAL LINKS |
