Dave Hope had a tough job. He had to maintain bass lines rhythmically with Phil Ehart, while keeping up with Kerry Livgren and Rich Williams musically, and even follow Robby Steinhardt at times in an almost "solo-esque" fashion without making it obvious that he was doing so. In short: Dave had to take a background/ foundational instrument (bass guitar) and give it a feature-forefront sound, and still remain backup. He pulled it off perfectly! You almost never saw the guy. He wasn't the focus of the camera; at least not for long. Some of the best musicians of all time are the ones you hardly know are there. They make the music work flawlessly for the good of the whole, but remain a "shadowy" figure in the back. Dave Hope was just such a musician. Dave was like the sleek, solid-black, Hemi V8 powered 1972 Dodge Charger amid a bunch of flashy Corvettes and Porsches. Simple and unassuming, but just try to take him on...! One word to describe the performance of Dave Hope...Spectacular! Hope was known, by those closest to him, as somewhat of an enigma. Today, Hope is an , in Destin, Florida. |
