Information About

Daphne Moon

Daphne Crane (previously '''Daphne Moon''') was a Fictional Character and the leading female character on the Sitcom '' Frasier '' played by actress Jane Leeves .

Daphne was a recent immigrant from Manchester, England who was employed by Dr. Frasier Crane in the first season as a physical therapist for his disabled father, Martin Crane . Due to some confusion, Daphne's position ended up becoming a live-in job, and over the years, she assumed many housekeeping and cooking duties in order to justify her continued stay (and higher pay).

FAMILY

Daphne came from a large family of nine children in which she was the only daughter. She had a rather complex relationship with her domineering mother, Gertrude Moon (played by Millicent Martin ), although her relationship with her father, Harry (played by Brian Cox ), was much better. She often mentioned her family, including various aunts and uncles, but she wasn't too happy when her mother moved to Seattle in Season 9.

Other members of Daphne's family included brother Simon, played by Anthony LaPaglia ; brother Michael, played by Robbie Coltrane ; brother Steven, played by Richard E. Grant ; and brother Nigel, played by Cameron Dye . Peculiarly, Daphne's family members had a wide range of British regional accents (for instance Coltrane and Grant had their natural Scottish and English accents whilst La Paglia's was an attempt at Cockney ), a fact that seemed to go unnoticed by the show's other characters.

NILES CRANE

Probably Daphne's most significant developing relationship over the course of the series was with Frasier Crane's younger brother, Dr. Niles Crane .

For many years, the tall (5'10"), beautiful Daphne was the secret love of Niles, and had been since the moment they first met. Despite the increasing obviousness of Niles' infatuation (including not-so-subtle comments and compliments, and Niles' tendency to smell her hair and admire her Rear-end ), Daphne apparently remained utterly oblivious to Niles' feelings towards her, and did not appear to reciprocate them (although she did consider Niles a very close personal friend and frequent confidante). During this time, she embarked on numerous (frequently unsuccessful) relationships, each one earning Niles' envy.

Niles kept his feelings private until Daphne became engaged to a rich lawyer named Donny Douglas in Season 6, when he seemingly gave up hope of any relationship and moved on. In Season 7, however, while drugged on pain medication, Frasier mistakenly told Daphne how Niles really felt about her. Shocked to discover Niles' true feelings towards her, Daphne subsequently found herself falling in love with Niles in return, placing her in the position Niles had been in for many years - lovestruck and pining for someone unaware of her true feelings.

Heartbroken to discover that he had, on impulse, married his girlfriend Mel, Daphne intended to go ahead with her marriage to Donny, and would have had Frasier - who had learnt of Daphne's true feelings - not intervened. In a two-part episode closing Season 7 and opening Season 8, Niles finally confessed his feelings to her, and although initially rejecting him, Daphne eventually changed her mind. Abandoning Donny at the altar, the two initially ran away together in the Crane family's Winnebago , but decided to return and face the music. This act would have serious consequences for both Niles and Daphne throughout the season, but the two eventually entered into a stable, happy relationship.

In Season 10, Daphne and Niles married in a small, private ceremony in Reno, Nevada . In Season 11, they had their first child, David Crane, in the final episode of the series, " Goodnight, Seattle ".

CHARACTER

Like most characters on ''Frasier'', Daphne had many eccentricities. She would often tell long-rambling stories about her family back in England, often remembering rather grim or traumatic events with a cheerful disposition- to the considerable discomfort of the Crane family. She was also a firm believer in the Supernatural , and she believed herself to be "a wee bit" Psychic . Many of her predictions came true, though often in a somewhat muddled way. For example, when looking for a lost earring, she sensed it being in Martin's room, then in Frasier's room, and suddenly in the hallway; shocked, she saw Eddie running around the flat.
