Struck by lightning on September 17 , 1975 while on a telephone as a thunderstorm approached, Brinkley was clinically dead for 28 minutes and taken to a hospital morgue. Brinkley described many characteristic details of the NDE as well as certain unique ones. His account includes an Out Of Body Experience upon exit with extensive external observations, a tunnel passage, a meeting with a Being of Light (in other narratives identified by some as Jesus ), a high-speed detailed life review, including his experiences as a sniper in Vietnam, discussion of a life mission, and a strong reluctance to return. In addition he describes a flight to a place with a church-like structure and revelations regarding future events, allegedly including the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and the First Persian Gulf War . Brinkley's case was one of many studied in depth by NDE researcher Raymond Moody . While his recovery was initially slow, Brinkley now makes public talks about his experience, which he detailed in a book titled '' Saved By The Light '' (co-authored by Paul Perry), including appearances on the Coast To Coast AM radio show.
