Information About

Dan Graham

He was born in Urbana, Illinois , but moved to Winfield Park, NJ at age 3, and then to Westfield, NJ at age 13. Dan's early childhood experience of New Jersey informed some of his early minimal art pieces. Dan and Robert Smithson photographed New Jersey together during the mid to late sixties. Dan was romantically linked to artist Lee Lozano , rock artist Laurie Anderson , and artist Judith Barry among others. Dan has served as a visiting teacher internationally, and was especially influential in Halifax and Vancouver.

Dan Graham has been identified as a minimal artist, conceptual artist, performance artist, rock music writer, art critic, architecture critic and writer, pop culture culture, educator, sculptor, and collaborator with architects and other artists. Widely appreciated in Europe and Japan, Dan has received less recognition in the US than his contemporaries and friends, who include Robert Smithson, Gordon Matta-Clark, Vito Acconci, Sol Lewitt, Carl Andre, Dan Flavin, and many others.
