Damien Richard Martyn (born October 21 , 1971 in Darwin ) is an Australia n Cricket er. He is known as a batsman with 'classical' technique who is quite capable of building an innings, as his Test and one-day international averages suggest (47.96 and 41.88 as of 18 October , 2005 ). He initially came onto the international scene against the West Indies in December 1992 , however, his appearance was short-lived due to a poor shot chasing a low fourth innings total to win, during a January 1994 SCG Test against South Africa , which effectively sealed their victory.

He re-appeared at the start of the millennium and has since put in regular appearances for Australia , becoming integral to the middle-order and filling the void at no. 4 left by Mark Waugh 's international retirement.

He was chosen as a Wisden Cricketer Of The Year as a result of his performances in The Ashes in the summer of 2001 . He was also presented the McGilvray Medal in 2005 as the ABC's Test Cricketer Of The Year .

In 2004 he scored 1353 Test runs at an average of 56.37, including 6 centuries. Martyn is also an occasional medium-pacer and distinguished fieldsman who has created spectacular run-outs. He has also played as a wicketkeeper, most notably as a stand in for Ian Healy and Tim Zoehrer during some county matches in Australia 's Ashes Tour Of England In 1993 .

Following a poor Ashes Tour Of England In 2005 , where he recorded a total of 178 runs at an average of 19.77, Martyn was dropped from the Australian Test side to play in the ICC Super Series 2005 . Ironically, he had been voted 'Test Player of the Year' for the 2004 calendar year. However, he was retained in the ODI side over the 2005/06 summer.

He was recalled to the test squad at the expense of Brad Hodge for the three-test series in South Africa in March and April 2006 . Chairman of Selectors Trevor Hohns cited his experience as the major reason for his recall.
