The Damascus Gate (''a.k.a Shechem Gate''; ''Bab-al-Amud'', 'Gate of Columns') was built in 1542 by the late Ottoman ruler Suleiman The Magnificent , on the northern outer wall surrounding the Old City of Jerusalem .
