Information About

Dale Hunter

Dale Hunter was acquired by the Washington Capitals in a blockbuster trade with the Quebec Nordiques . This trade mirrored the Rod Langway deal in that the Caps sent resources (in this case, the draft pick that became Joe Sakic ) that led to the other team gaining significant post-season success. However, Dale Hunter served as a great captain for the Capitals and was one of the most courageous players to ever skate in the NHL . He broke the 1000 points barrier and played in the NHL All-Star game in 1997. The following year, he led the Capitals to their first appearance in the Stanley Cup finals, knocking off the favoured Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, and Buffalo Sabres. Hunter was feared and respected by most people that came across him.

In spite of his reputation, Hunter wasn't above taking a cheap shot on another player now and then. He holds one of the NHL's longest suspension records; 21 games for checking Pierre Turgeon from behind during the deciding Game 6 of the playoffs between the Capitals and New York Islanders in 1993, after Turgeon had scored and play was stopped. Hunter had otherwise led his team with eight goals during the first-round postseason series. Hunter accrued 3565 penalty minutes during his NHL career, good for second-most in the record books.

Hunter's jersey number (#32) was retired by the Capitals on March 11 , 2000 . Hunter is currently the co-owner, president and head coach of the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League , which won the 2005 Memorial Cup .

On January 1, 2006, Mark and his brother Dale, as co-owners of the London Knights, were named to the 2006 Mayor's New Year's Honours List for Sports by the City of London, Ontario.
