VARIOUS Q&A WITH DALE

Q: Dale’s pencil style is very tight, very finished. Has he ever considered just skipping over the inker and making a high contrast version of his pencils (supposing the tech issues could be solved) to create the final page?

A: My pencils tend to be very tight and polished, probably more than they need to be. Instead of plastering my pages with “x’s” for black, I treat the penciled page as a finished piece of art, tightening the line-work up and filling the blacks in. This isn’t the most economical way of drawing time-wise, but it’s something I do for my own artistic and creative satisfaction. To see original, finished pencils is to see the pure, unaltered intent of the artist. Publishing the penciled art this way gives us artists a new advantage in the struggle to communicate expression and emotion to the readers. I would love to try it as an experiment. However, I don’t think that I would want to eliminate the inks altogether. Collaborations often produce new, exciting and sometimes unexpected results. That’s just as much a part of comic art as expression is and I embrace it fully.

Q: What is the most difficult part of the human body to draw?.

A: I’d say feet. There are lots of subtle angles that are hard to get just right... Which is why so many artists don’t even bother trying and leave them out of whole issues!

Q: Many artists have started using a computer to help with his drawings. Is that something you'd ever consider doing?.

A: I don’t use them, but if I were to start, I’d only use them to a limited degree, to draw fire and clouds, things that are hard to render in pencil.

Q: Dale, do you listen to music while working? If so, what do you listen to (specific bands or musical genre)?

A: Man, that’s a tough question! My collection is huge; I have something from just about every genre. I go through phases varying from Classical to Pop to Death Metal . I have regulars, though, like Elton John , Immolation , Pink Floyd , Iggy Pop , Supertramp , Rod Stewart , Napalm Death , Genesis , Dead Can Dance , Opera IX , Elend , and Borknagar … I also listen to lots of moody movie soundracks, like The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow , The Others , and Hannibal . My tastes are really eclectic, depending on my mood on any given day.
