Đ (lowercase '''đ''') is a letter in the extended Latin Alphabet and is used in Vietnamese , Shtokavian Western South Slavic Languages ( Bosnian , Croatian , Serbian , Serbo-Croatian ), and in Northern Sami and Skolt Sami languages. In Vietnamese, "Đ" is pronounced like the English '' D ''; the stroke serves to distinguish it from the plain Vietnamese ''d'', which is pronounced like the English '' Z '' or '' Y ''. In some Vietnamese texts, the stroke crosses the entire letter, rather than just the left side. It is the sixth Letter of the Croatian and Serbian (Latin form) alphabets. Its phonetic value is and it is used to represent a Voiced Alveolo-palatal Affricate . It was first introduced by Đuro Daničić . It corresponds to the letter Ђ of the Cyrillic Alphabet used for writing the Serbian Language . It is sometimes transcribed as Digraph ''dj'' as in Franjo Tudjman .
