Designed as a next generation successor to the versatile the DSA Righteous Fist Of Heaven class Deep Stand-off Attack Ship, DSX is the newest and most advanced ship class in the High Guard fleet. Incorporating many hard-learned lessons from the recently concluded Magog hostilities and the latest in Systems Commonwealth technology, the DSA 2 is the most lethal Starship -killer ever built. Designed to operate with a minimum of Crew and without fleet support behind enemy lines for extended periods of time, the new DSA forgoes such standard shipboard features as small craft, a Lancer contingent, and research capabilities in favor of Missiles , Missiles , and more Missiles . The Wrath of Achilles is the most heavily armed Starship launched by the Commonwealth, and her arsenal includes the latest in extreme-range kill vehicles as well as the usual suite of offensive and defensive missiles, AP guns, and PDLs. Additionally, the new DSA's distinctive, knife-like profile gives her a tiny Sensor Cross-section , making her nearly impossible for foes to detect. And any enemy who does manage to engage her will find that reactive Shielding and cold Plasma armor make the Wrath of Achilles exceptionally resilient and Damage -resistant, while her lack of entry points (access to the ship is through a single, heavily fortified Airlock )leaves the ship nearly invulnerable to boarding raids.So while the recent Treaty of Antares and the advent of peace with the Magog has slowed down the new DSA construction schedule (to date, only three have been completed and launched-the Wrath of Achilles, Balance of Judgement and the Siege Perilous .

Philosophy:

Siege Perilous II-class DSX's were designed to do one thing: pop out of slipstream, unload at least 6.4 gigatons of ordnance from extreme range and disappear. The advantages of exchanging ELS tubes for fighter squadrons are several-fold:

1) Maintenance. "The more complicated the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain." A large quantity of homogenous, relatively simple systems are much easier to maintain and more reliable than the Glorious Heritage alternative.

2) Crewing. No fighters = no operators = no support/maint crew = no extra emergency or incidental crew. Extend this argument to other mission systems deployed on XMCs.

3) Massing of effects. This is much simpler when the vast majority of the offensive payload is single-source.

The DSX is vulnerable if you can get close to it. but the whole point of the platform is lost if the ship's Captain allows it to happen. Again, the Siege Perilous II was not built for hanging in a hairball. It was built to put steel on target independently, primarily for operations against the Magog. A ship like the DSX with a small crew and overwhelming, long-range offensive capabilities is highly desirable against an enemy that has certain... predilections.
