is a fictional kind of three dimensional RADAR replacement in the reimagined '' Battlestar Galactica '' television series.
The name is an Acronym , standing for irection, '''RA'''nge, and '''DIS'''tance, according to the original series script. It sometimes seems able to scan faster than light (this may simply be a plot convenience), and probably cannot scan "around" solid objects. It has difficulty scanning carbon composite. It is also sometimes crippled by astronomical events like nebula clouds, and magnetic fields around planetary bodies. The vessels appear as crosses contained within circles, suspended in a three dimentional half-circle representing the field of scan. The marks often change colour and name depending on vessel. Lieutenant Gaeta is often put in charge of monitoring the DRADIS.
The crew of the Battlestar ''Galactica'' are reliant on the DRADIS to detect incoming Cylon attacks and other vessels approaching the fleet. The DRADIS is also used in planning flight tactics against enemies and evaluating whether to dispatch the fighter squadron.
