He is also a movie buff who claims to be heavily influenced by Hitchcock. In the special features on the Rear Window DVD he discusses the masterful handling of the movie and how he in turn was inspired by it. Although his early films were not very well known he enjoyed mainstream success with L.A. Confidential, which earned him an Oscar nod for Best director. Unfortunately he lost to James Cameron who won for Titanic, but on the plus side he was awarded an Oscar for best adapted screenplay, along with his co-writer Brian Helgeland. At the moment Hanson has two films on the way: Lucky You, a movie starring Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore about a gambler fighting his own personal demons in order to win a poker championship and The Crimson Petal and White, about a young prostitute who finds herself suddenly in a position of power when she becomes the mistress of a powerful patriach.
