GEOGRAPHY Cumberland is located at 36°58'37" North, 82°59'15" West (36.977016, -82.987434). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 11.9 Km&2 (4.6 Mi&2 ). 11.9 km&2 (4.6 mi&2) of it is land and 0.22% is water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 2,611 people, 1,076 households, and 723 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 220.1/km&2 (570.5/mi&2). There were 1,288 housing units at an average density of 108.6/km&2 (281.4/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 93.60% White , 5.09% African American , 0.50% Native American , 0.04% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.04% from Other Races , and 0.73% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,076 households out of which 31.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% were Married Couples living together, 16.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% were non-families. 31.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.95.
