is the main character from the
1995 Super Famicom /
SNES game ''
Chrono Trigger '', developed by
Square Co., Ltd. . Many fans of the game suspect that the name Crono is likely meant to be due to the limitation on character names being 5 letters at most. Since the Japanese クロノ cannot specify anything beyond the pronunciation of the name, it's unclear whether or not this is a correct assumption, as Crono and Chrono have no pronunciation difference. Crono's magical type is
Lightning in the English version of the game. In the original Japanese version, his magical type is specified as
Heaven , which seems to be the holy equivalent of the
Shadow type. The original classification explains the fact that Crono's magic is not all electrically-oriented, as it appears to include light magic and the occasional healing spell.
Crono lives with his mother (Gina, in the
Japanese version) in Truce Village within the Kingdom of Guardia. He meets
Marle at the Millennial Fair by accidentally colliding with her near Leene's Bell. Being the princess of Guardia kingdom in disguise, Marle tells Crono that she is not familiar with the place, and asks to tag along. Later, upon returning to the castle, Crono is accused of kidnapping her by the King's Chancellor. Depending on Crono's actions at the Millenial Fair, he will either be pronounced guilty or innocent by the court.
In
12,000 B.C. , when the party is confronted with the parasitic alien
Lavos in the Ocean Palace of the
Kingdom Of Zeal , Crono sacrifices himself in order to save his friends (and with this, the image
Janus had foreseen turns out to be truth). Later, using the Chrono Trigger (Time Egg), he is saved from this fate.
Despite being the game's protagonist, Crono
Never Speaks In The Game's Dialogue , as it is the case in some RPG and video-games, with the notable exception occurring in one of the game's many endings. Designed by
Akira Toriyama , Crono shares many of the man's design characteristics, including lots of spiky hair, well-defined muscles, and large eyes. This design reminds many of his character
Goku from his smash hit
Dragon Ball series. His weapon of choice is a
Katana .
After being drawn into a time vortex following the defeat of Magus at his lair, Crono has a vision that he and Marle will be married later (and that he is, at the time, unemployed). The
PlayStation remake of Chrono Trigger includes an FMV scene at the end that shows Crono and Marle proceeding through their wedding celebration. In the sequel, ''
Chrono Cross '', Crono, Marle and
Lucca are presumed to have died according to some individuals, while others believe there is significant evidence to suggest that they are alright and what is seen are 'time echoes' as is discussed here in the
Chrono Compendium
- : "Spin-cut nearby enemies" (2 MP) - A spinning sword technique, Cyclone affects enemies within a fairly large, roughly circular area and inflicts roughly as much damage as a normal sword strike.
- : "Slash attack" (2 MP) - The Slash maneuver sends a small shockwave racing along the ground, attacking enemies in a straight line from Crono. It inflicts the same amount of damage as Cyclone, but has the additional bonus of negating certain powerful attacks that require the enemy to gather energy for a turn.
- : "Attack using Lightning" (2 MP) - The most basic Lightning-based spell, with which Crono sends a bolt of electricity crashing down upon a single enemy. He cannot learn this spell or any others, except Cyclone and Slash, without visiting Spekkio.
- : "2x normal damage" (4 MP) - A powerful airborne strike that deals twice the damage of a regular attack to a single enemy.
- : "Strikes all enemies" (8 MP) - An advanced version of Lightning that is used to attack all enemies onscreen in a blaze of electricity. It inflicts greater Lightning-based damage than the original spell.
- : "Revives an ally" (10 MP) - Crono's only healing spell, Life restores a fallen comrade from KO status—albeit with only a small portion of his or her maximum HP.
- : "Attack enemy with Confuse 4 times" (12 MP) - Crono's strongest sword technique. Darting around the enemy, Crono slashes four times in succession, inflicting the damage of a regular attack each time. This attack does not inflict Chaos status, despite its name.
- : "Ultimate damage on all enemies" (20 MP) - Crono's strongest spell. Levitating into the air, he gathers light energy, then detonates it in a massive explosion. Luminaire deals heavy Lightning-based damage to all enemies onscreen.

- : Ice/Spincut (Targets one enemy for ice damage)
