In Canadian political history continentalism refers to policies that emphasize Canadian trade and economic ties with the North America n continent, particularly the United States , over those with the United Kingdom and the British Empire . The traditional exponents of continentalism has been the Liberal Party Of Canada and particularly Farmer s and resource industries that advocated Reciprocity (ie Free Trade ) with the United States. At the same time, continentalism has taken on more negative connotations in Canada, where some see it as modern version of Manifest Destiny , or the idea of an United States that extended into both Canada and Mexico . As well, some of its biggest supporters have, in recent years, been followers of the American Neo-conservative movement, which is a cause of suspicion for some Canadians. SEE ALSO |
