Commack straddles the Town Of Huntington and the Town Of Smithtown . It is located on Long Island . GEOGRAPHY Commack, NY is located at 40°50'42" North, 73°16'60" West (40.845037, -73.283196). According to the United States Census Bureau , the CDP has a total area of 31.2 Km&2 (12.1 Mi&2 ). 31.2 km&2 (12.1 mi&2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. The name Commack comes from the Secatogue Indians who lived on the south shore between Copiague and Bayport. They named their northern lands in the center of the island Winnecomac meaning "Pleasant lands." This is what they must have thought when they looked over this area of flat lands with rich soil, and thick oak forests abounding with plants and wildlife. From the earliest days Commack was known for its fertile soil, abundance of game, and wood, however today all of Commack is settled and suburbanized, like most areas of Long Island. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 36,367 people, 11,697 households, and 10,176 families residing in the CDP. The Population Density was 1,164.3/km&2 (3,014.9/mi&2). There were 11,824 housing units at an average density of 378.5/km&2 (980.2/mi&2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.43% White , 0.25% African American , 0.05% Native American , 2.03% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.48% from Other Races , and 0.66% from two or more races. 2.10% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 11,697 households out of which 40.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 76.7% were Married Couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 13.0% were non-families. 10.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was 3.29. In the CDP the population was spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males. The median income for a household in the CDP was $84,009, and the median income for a family was $88,406. Males had a median income of $61,475 versus $39,124 for females. The Per Capita Income for the CDP was $30,840. 2.8% of the population and 2.0% of families were below the Poverty Line . 2.8% of those under the age of 18 and 4.5% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
