GEOGRAPHY Columbus is located at 43°20'14" North, 89°1'21" West (43.337366, -89.022753), along the Crawfish River . According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 10.4 Km&2 (4.0 Mi&2 ). 10.3 km&2 (4.0 mi&2) of it is land and 0.25% is water. The Columbus School District is also located here. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 4,479 people, 1,843 households, and 1,194 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 433.4/km&2 (1,122.7/mi&2). There were 1,927 housing units at an average density of 186.5/km&2 (483.0/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.28% White , 0.36% Black or African American , 0.22% Native American , 0.31% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 0.29% from Other Races , and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,843 households out of which 32.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% were Married Couples living together, 9.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 31.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.98. In the city the population was spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.1 males. The median income for a household in the city was $42,667, and the median income for a family was $52,604. Males had a median income of $36,518 versus $22,891 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $21,435. 5.4% of the population and 3.7% of families were below the Poverty Line . 4.0% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
