Information About

Coleg Gwent

The college was previously known as Gwent Tertiary College and was founded in 1992. It is the largest provider of tertiary education in Wales . The college is made up of six individual campuses. The campuses are Abergavenny ('The Hill'), Crosskeys , Ebbw Vale , City of Newport , Pontypool and Usk . The college's main headquarters are at the Usk campus. There are around 32,000 students from all age ranges studying both academic and vocational courses.

In many areas ( Pontypool being a good example) the college acts as a sixth form to a multiple of schools as well as serving the wider community. The colleges have been criticised in recent years for their lack of good results relative to their large investment. In 2005 it was announced that the Pontypool campus alone was £660,000 in debt.

The college strives to educate its students in a dynamic, stimulating and progressive environment. Many of the courses offered by Coleg Gwent have been accused of being 'Mickey Mouse' and many see the whole institution as an academic joke. This, however, must be read lightly as many of the college alumni are now in university - with many students going onto Oxbridge courses.

On the 19th April, 2006 it was announced that Welsh Assembly grant money receieved by Coleg Gwent was to be cut. This will have an adverse effect on the college's budget due to its continued promise to increase lecturers' wages ''despite'' budget issues.
