There are several thoughts as to the origin of the city's name. One belief is that it is named after Cleveland, England . Other traditions say the community was named for Cleveland, Ohio; or for Benjamin Cleveland, Revolutionary War soldier; or for John Cleveland, an original local settler.


GEOGRAPHY


Cleveland is located at 35°10'17" North, 84°52'16" West (35.171483, -84.871067).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 64.6 Km&2 (25.0 Mi&2 ). 64.6 km&2 (25.0 mi&2) of it is land and Mouse Creek is the only waterway.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 37,192 people, 15,037 households, and 9,518 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 575.5/km&2 (1,490.9/mi&2). There were 16,431 housing units at an average density of 254.3/km&2 (658.7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 89.00% White , 7.01% African American , 0.23% Native American , 0.97% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 1.29% from Other Races , and 1.46% from two or more races. 2.87% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 15,037 households out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% were Married Couples living together, 13.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.9% under the age of 18, 15.4% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,098, and the median income for a family was $40,150. Males had a median income of $30,763 versus $21,480 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $18,316. 16.1% of the population and 11.3% of families were below the Poverty Line . 19.5% of those under the age of 18 and 14.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
