Cleethorpes station opened in 1840 by the Great Central Railway and linked the coastal resort to Doncaster. In the 1970s, Cleethorpes station had the honour of having a twice daily return service to London King's Cross locomotive hauled ( Class 55 ). The 1980s saw services degrade as platforms became unused. As of 2004 only platforms 2 and 3 remain in use. Other platforms at the station are in such a state of neglect that sand has blown from the nearby beach onto the lines and formed drifts. About half a mile north are the station's disused cleaning facilities, a testament to busier times at Cleethorpes. |
