Clark County is a County located in the U.S. State of Indiana . As of 2000 , the population is 96,472. The County Seat is Jeffersonville 6 . GEOGRAPHY According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 974 Km&2 (376 Mi&2 ). 971 km&2 (375 mi&2) of it is land and 3 km&2 (1 mi&2) of it is water. HISTORY Clark County was formed in 1801. It is named for Gen. George Rodgers Clark , who captured the Northwest Territory for Virginia during the Revolutionary War . DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 96,472 people, 38,751 households, and 26,544 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 99/km&2 (257/mi&2). There were 41,176 housing units at an average density of 42/km&2 (110/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 90.30% White , 6.63% Black or African American , 0.26% Native American , 0.59% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 0.79% from Other Races , and 1.40% from two or more races. 1.86% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 38,751 households out of which 31.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.10% were Married Couples living together, 12.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% were non-families. 26.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.95. In the county the population was spread out with 24.20% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 30.60% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.70 males. The median income for a household in the county was $40,111, and the median income for a family was $47,412. Males had a median income of $32,197 versus $24,033 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $19,936. 8.10% of the population and 6.00% of families were below the Poverty Line . 10.20% of those under the age of 18 and 7.50% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
