HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE

The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was constructed in 1870 . It was erected by the Chinese Catholic Mission serving a Congregation of all the Chinese Dialect groups and their Indian Catholic Brethren . It was also a centre for many Europe an Missionaries who needed to learn the Chinese Language before other postings.

The History of the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is also closely linked with events associated with Saint Joseph's Institution at its adjacent Former Site . It was on the former site of Saint Joseph's Institution that the Chinese Catholic community built a Chapel in the 1830s . However, by the 1840s , it had become too small.

Instead of enlarging the chapel, work was begun on the Cathedral Of The Good Shepherd near by and the chapel was turned into a School , Saint Joseph's Institution, which has since been converted into the Singapore Art Museum opened in 1996 .

By the late 1860s , a new church was needed and the present building was erected. It was then smaller, with only seven pairs of Column s but, in 1891 - 1892 , it was enlarged and a new Transept and Sacristy built. In 1911 it was further extended and, in that year, the Choir Loft and entrance Porch were decorated.

Probably sometime in the 1870s , Father Pierre Paris bestowed the three exceptionally fine Bells , still in use today. It was also Father Paris who began to build the Steeple before his death in 1883 . Unfortunately, the old Wood en Pew s have had their '' Fleur-de-lis '' decorations removed.

The Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul was Gazette d as a National Monument on 10 February 2003 .
