Chukyo region (中京地方 ''Chūkyō-chihō'') lies in the middle of Japan 's main island, Honshu. The Chukyo region encompasses three prefectures in the midland of Japan, east of the Kansai region: Aichi, Gifu, and Mie. Nagoya is also called Chukyo (中京 ''Chūkyō''), or "middle capital", because it is the largest city in the area between Tokyo , the "eastern capital", and Kyoto , the western capital (and formerly the only one).
