Chthon (comics)

Chthon was "born" after the Demiurge seeded the Planet Earth with the beginnings of life. Consequently, Chthon is billions of years old. Most of the beings created by the Demiurge degenerated into demons, with the notable exception of Gaea, the earth goddess. Chthon was the principal author of the Darkhold , the Earth's first tome of Black Magic , and may have been the Earth's first practitioner of this form of magic. Chthon was chased off of Earth by his "nephew", Atum the God Eater, who was the offspring of Gaea and the Demiurge. This conflict was allegedly one of the causes of the extinction of the Dinosaur s. Atum subsequently took up residence inside the Earth's sun, not returning to Earth until the modern day when he assisted his half-brother Thor in battle against the serpentine Elder God Set . Chthon was eventually imprisoned beneath Mount Wundagore in what would become the Eastern European nation of Transia, and was worshipped through the Darkhold by the cult of the Darkholders. In the medieval period, the sorcerer Modred The Mystic was corrupted by the Darkhold in an attempt to save the life of his beloved, but in becoming corrupt, he lost her.

In the late 1940s, the High Evolutionary made his base here with the assistance of Dr. Horace Grayson, the father of the 1950s superhero Marvel Boy . In the 1950s, a young Philip Masters obtained clay from the mountain that had been granted mystical power by Chthon's presence; he would later use this clay as the Puppet Master . The Evolutionary's colleague Jonathan Drew came here during this time with his wife Miriam and daughter Jessica. The werewolf Gregor Russoff, a Darkholder whose grandson would become the Werewolf By Night , attacked and killed Miriam. The Evolutionary placed Jessica in suspnded animation as Jonathan was possessed by the ghost of the magician Magnus, who had fought the Darkholders for centuries. The Evolutionary created a race of artificially evolved humanoid animals, the New Men. He was comvinced by Magnus (in Drew's form) to pattern their codes of action after medieval knighthood, and named the elites of the New Men the Knights of Wundagore. During this time, a pregnant Gypsy woman named Magda arrived at Wundagore, on the verge of giving birth. Unknown to all, she was the wife of the man who would become Magneto .

Russoff attempted to summon Chthon, but was only partially successful. Meanwhile, Magda was giving birth, with Bova, a bovine female New Man, assisting as midwife. Chthon killed many of the Knights of Wundagore, but was banished again when Magnus's spirit possessed Russoff's body and allowed the feedback from the Darkhold's magic to kill Russoff. As his presence faded, Chthon sent a part of his essence into one of Magda's twin children, Wanda, whose Mutation was transformed into the ability to manipulate Chaos and Probability and, later, to manipulate reality itself. Magda died, and the children were placed into suspended animation. Several years later, Robert Frank and his pregnant wife Madeline (formerly the superheroes Whizzer and Miss America ) came to Wundagore. Madeline died giving birth to a stillborn child that was deformed by the Franks' exposure to radiation at the hands of their enemy Isbisa . When the Whizzer asked to see his child, Bova instead attempted to give him Magda's children Wanda and Pietro, but when he learned of his wife's death, he fled. He would for years believe that the twins were his own abandoned children, although the Franks also had one surviving son, Nuklo , who was in suspended animation in the care of the United States government. The infant twins were returned to suspended animation for decades until Bova brought them to a Transian gypsy named Django Maximoff, who raised the children as his own. Later, Jessica Drew was also freed from suspended animation; she would become the first Spider-Woman , while the twins would become the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver .

In the modern era, Modred the Mystic and Magnus opposed the Darkholders and Morgan Le Fey , respectively, with Magnus also becoming an ally of Spider-Woman. Later, the Avengers , including the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, traveled to Transia to investigate their origins. Chthon possessed the Scarlet Witch, but was exorcised by Django Maximoff at the cost of his own life. Chthon's influence amplified some years later thanks to a proliferation of Darkhold pages scattered across the Earth. A group of mystic investigators, led by Victoria Montesi and including Modred, opposed the users of the Darkhold spells. Chthon mystically impregnated Montesi, but his presence was exorcised from the child during its birth by Doctor Strange .
