The name "Charlotte Russe" comes from the French dessert of the same name. It is a cold dessert of Bavarian cream set in a mold lined with ladyfingers. Charlotte is a corruption of the Old English word ''charlyt'' meaning a "dish of custard." There is a lot of doubt surrounding the origins of the name "charlotte." Meat dishes that were known as charlets were popular in the 15th century. It is said to have been invented by the French chef Marie Antoine Careme (1784-1833), who named it in honor of his Russian employer Czar Alexander. Other historians say that this sweet dish took its name from Queen Charlotte (1744-1818), wife of George III. The store was dedicated to selling clothes for women ages 15 to 35. The Charlotte Russe company did not see big growth until 21 years later when it was bought in September of 1996 by Sanders, Karp and Megue. The new owners had an ambitious plan of expansion for Charlotte Russe and the company eventually became a chain of Shopping Mall stores. In 1997 Charlotte Russe bought out woman's clothier RAMPAGE. By 1998 , 29 Charlotte Russe stores were opened in malls throughout the United States. RAMPAGE continues to operate under their own name as a subsidiary of Charlotte Russe. By 2004 , Charlotte Russe counted 256 stores across the United States and RAMPAGE had 50 stores. The stores had also branched out and now sells a limited amount of men's apparel in select stores. |
