The newspaper is in a Joint Operating Agreement with the owner of the morning paper, the Charleston Gazette. The Daily Mail was founded in 1914 by former Alaska Gov. Walter Clark and remained the property of his heirs until 1987, when Thomson Newspapers purchased it. In 1998, Thomson sold the Daily Mail to the Denver-based MediaNews Group. Then, in May 2004, MediaNews sold its economic interest in Charleston Newspapers to the Daily Gazette Company. The Daily Mail publishes Monday through Friday afternoons. On weekend mornings the Gazette staff largely produces the combined Saturday Gazette-Mail and Sunday Gazette-Mail. Saturday's paper features two editorial pages, one from the Gazette editors and one from the Daily Mail editors. The Sunday edition includes side-by-side columns with contrasting views by the editorial page editors of the two papers. |
