A longtime National Party politician, he was appointed Governor General in 1959 . After whites voted in the 1960 Referendum to sever South Africa's links with the British Monarchy , Swart was chosen to be the Republic 's first State President in 1961 . This convention became common in other former Commonwealth Realm s. Swart held this new office until 1967 . |
