Catherine Murphy is an Irish Independent Teachta Dála (Member of Parliament). She was elected in the Kildare North By-election, 2005 . Catherine Murphy is one of the newest members of Dáil Éireann . She was brought up in Dublin but moved to Leixlip in 1978 . She became involved in politics in 1991 when she was elected to Kildare County Council as an Independent councillor. She has also served as a member of Leixlip town council. In 2005 she became one of the newest members of Dáil Éireann when she was elected for Kildare North in a by-election. Murphy took Charlie McCreevy 's old seat following his retirement from domestic politics. Her by-election campaign had the backing of several other prominent Independent TD s such as Tony Gregory and Marian Harkin .
