Cathedral Basilica Of St. Peter Apostle

The erection of Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter Apostle in Frascati , Italy began when the foundation stone was laid on June 29th, 1598. After twelve years, on June 29th, 1610 the first Mass was celebrated. In 1696 the young architect Giovanni Fontana began work on a new facade, which was finished in 1700.

The interior of the cathedral was destroyed by a bombing on September 8th, 1943, and so today it appears bare, except for a little chapel off to the right.

HOUSE OF STUART CONNECTION

In the nave, on the inner side of the facade, there is a marble monument of Charles Edward Stuart the "Bonnie Prince Charlie" with a memorial tablet. When he died in 1788, his brother, the duke of York and bishop of Frascati, Henry Benedict Stuart celebrated his solemn funeral here on February 3rd 1788.

The latin epitaph said: HEIC SITUS EST KAROLUS ODOARDUS CUI PATER JACOBIS III REX ANGLIAE SCOTIAE FRANCIAE HIBERNIAE PRIMUS NATORUM PATERNI JURIS ET REGIAE DIGNITATIS SUCCESSOR ET HERES QUI DOMICILIO SIBI ROMAE DELECTO COMES ALBANYENSIS DICTUS EST VIXIT ANNOS LXVII ET MENSEM DECESSIT IN PACE PRIDIE KAL. FEBB. ANNO MDCCLXXXVIII HENRICUS CARD. EPISCOP. TUSCULAN. CUI FRATERNA JURA TITULIQUE CESSERE DUCIS HEBORACENSIS APPELLATIONE RESUMPTA IN IPSO LUCTU AMORI ET REVERENTIA OBSEQUUTUS INDICTO IN TEMPLUM SUUM FUNERE MULTIS CUM LACRIMIS PRAESENS IUSTA PERSOLVIT FRATRI AUGUSTISSIMO HONOREMQUE SEPULCRI AMPLIOREM DESTINAVIT

When his brother died in 1807, both brothers were laid to rest next to their father, James Francis Edward Stuart in the crypt of St. Peter's Basilica , where all three are memorialized on the Monument To The Royal Stuarts .
