Baptist Liberal Arts College located in
Jefferson City, Tennessee , northeast of Knoxville. Current enrollment is about 2200.
The current
President is Dr. James Netherton. Ralph H. Elliot of
Rochester, New York is the most recent recipient of the Distingished Alumnus award.
The college is named for
Baptist layman James Harvey Carson (
1801 -
1880 ) and the Newman family, represented by William Cate Newman (
1809 -
1890 ). Carson-Newman College was founded in
1851 as the Mossy Creek Missionary Baptist Seminary. The College officially became Carson-Newman College in
1888 upon the joining of the all-male school Carson College with the all-female Newman College.
In , the College added a fifth steeple, the Center for Global Education in celebration of the College's
Sesquicentennial anniversary.
Carson-Newman's athletic teams plays as the Eagles. They are members of the
National Collegiate Athletic Association and compete in
Division II . The school is a member of the
South Atlantic Conference . Carson-Newman fields 16
Varsity as well as a cheerleading and dance team.
In
2005 , the Eagles
Football team finished with eight wins and two losses, and was ranked 18th in Division II, but did not advance to the
Playoff s. Other C-N teams are regularly ranked in top-25 polls within the division. In the late
1990s , the Eagles reached the Division II championship game, but lost each time.
