Information About

Cape May-lewes Ferry

The Ferry carries both passenger cars and foot passengers (as well as occasional RVs and tractor trailers). It has a capacity of about a hundred cars, and individual ferry trips sell out in advance during the popular summer weekends, so reservations are recommended.

The ferry trip takes approximately 90 minutes, and provides a view of a Lighthouse at the Cape May end, and two lighthouses at the Lewes end (the two breakwater lights of Cape Henlopen ).

The ferry also offers a variety of special excursions such as the NASCAR package and the annual Fireworks Cruise around the 4th of July.

Service began on July 1 , 1964 , with ferryboats purchased from Virginia , which had been made available with the recent opening of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel , which rendered their Virginia service obsolete.

Over the years, there has been talk of building a Bridge-tunnel across the channel, similar to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, about 200 miles south, but those plans have never been realized.

The ferry is owned and operated by the Delaware River And Bay Authority .
