GEOGRAPHY

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 66.8 Km&2 (25.8 Mi&2 ). 47.4 km&2 (18.3 mi&2) of it is land and 19.5 km&2 (7.5 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 29.14% water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 5,254 people, 2,390 households, and 1,414 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 110.9/km&2 (287.3/mi&2). There were 2,883 housing units at an average density of 60.9/km&2 (157.6/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.33% White , 0.25% Black or African American , 0.13% Native American , 0.40% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.15% from Other Races , and 0.74% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,390 households out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were Married Couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% were non-families. 34.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.11 and the average family size was 2.71.

In the town the population was spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 22.2% from 25 to 44, 30.3% from 45 to 64, and 23.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 83.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 77.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $39,877, and the median income for a family was $56,439. Males had a median income of $33,500 versus $26,645 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $26,126. 8.0% of the population and 5.5% of families were below the Poverty Line . 6.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
