Information About

Cambodian French

Cambodian French is a French Dialect spoken in Cambodia .

It dates back to the French colonization of Indochina in 1863 . To make the local inhabitants — especially Khmer and Chinese — understand French, colonists taught French to the locals, although the locals taught them their own language and even some Chinese Spoken Variant s such as Teochew and Cantonese . This French dialect was influenced by Khmer and Chinese spoken variants, and was spoken by children of married French men and Khmer or ethnic Chinese women. This is still used as a second language in schools, universities, and government, although most of the younger generations and members of the business world choose to learn English .
