COMPOSITION OF THE TEST For the English part, students have to take a multiple-choice test and answer an essay question. They are tested on their vocabulary and ability to understand informational and literary texts. The writing section aims at testing the ability to follow directions and conventions. The mathematics part tests Statistics and Probability , Data Analysis , Geometry , Arithmetic , and Algebra . This part is only tested with multiple-choice questions to pass the test high school students must demonstrate basic eighth grade English and math skills. PRO AND CONS It has been noted that students who fail CAHSEE are also more likely to be behind in credits. Although this might be an indication that CAHSEE accurately tests student, it might also be seen as a second hurdle toward graduation and demoralizes students instead of helping them. However, CAHSEE could also be credited for signaling high-schools that give passing grades to students that did not master English or Math. Students have several opportunities to pass the CAHSEE, beginning with the first round of testing in their sophomore year. If they do not pass both portions of the CAHSEE by the second semester of their senior year, they will not graduate. Therefore, the exam has been criticized because it is such a high stakes test. It can also be seen as unfair to non English-speaking communities, since it cannot be taken in other languages. But many supporters point out that the CAHSEE tests only basic english skills and combined with a fifty percent pass rate provides student no excuses for not passing EXTERNAL LINKS
