Information About

Business Studies

Business studies is a Vocational course that involves learning about key business skills and strategies. The course can vary depending on which exam board is being used. This article concentrates on the Irish course.

THE SYLLABUS

This subject comprises Bookkeeping, Employment (Industrial relations/disputes), The Consumer (protecting the consumer and consumer rights), Insurance, Banking and many more business related topics. Ordinary Level covers the same course, but Higher level goes into more detail.

THE EXAM

The ordinary level examination consists of one paper, while the higher level exam contains two papers, usually sat on the same calendar day. The higher level Business Studies exam is the only exam outside the three core subjects ( English , Maths & Irish (Gaelic)) that comprises two papers.lala

LEAVING CERTIFICATE CONTINUATION

Once the three year Junior Cert has been completed, you may do any of the three non-compulsory exams in the Leaving Certifcate :

1: Business (Full Title-Business Organisation)

2: Accounting

3: Economics / Economics History (A combination of these two subjects is NOT ALLOWED)

JUNIOR CERT SYLLABUS CONTROVERSY

The Junior Cert Business Studies course combines all three aspects of the Leaving Cert course (apart from Economic History) although there have been complaints that the course is too heavy and that the syllabus should be separated like the Leaving Cert syllabus. However, some teachers and the Irish Department Of Education And Science argue that the course is intended to be combined in order to give the Junior Cert students a wider knowledge of Leaving Cert subjects.
