Brown County is a County located in the U.S. State of Indiana . As of 2000 , the Population is 14,957. The County Seat is Nashville 6 .


GEOGRAPHY

According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 820 Km&2 (317 Mi&2 ). 809 km&2 (312 mi&2) of it is land and 11 km&2 (4 mi&2) of it is Water . The total area is 1.38% water.

HISTORY

Brown County was formed in 1836. It is named for Gen. Jacob Brown , who defeated the British at the Battle Of Sackett's Harbor in the War Of 1812 .


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 14,957 people, 5,897 households, and 4,434 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 18/km&2 (48/mi&2). There were 7,163 housing units at an average density of 9/km&2 (23/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 98.16% White , 0.21% Black or African American , 0.22% Native American , 0.20% Asian , 0.01% Pacific Islander , 0.37% from Other Races , and 0.82% from two or more races. 0.88% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 5,897 households out of which 29.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.80% were Married Couples living together, 6.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.80% were non-families. 20.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the county the population was spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 6.30% from 18 to 24, 27.90% from 25 to 44, 29.60% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 100.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $43,708, and the median income for a family was $49,252. Males had a median income of $36,828 versus $24,321 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $20,548. 8.90% of the population and 7.70% of families were below the Poverty Line . 9.10% of those under the age of 18 and 10.10% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
