Broad Street is a major street in Philadelphia . The city of Philadelphia was planned in the 17th century, it was designed to have numbered streets in a north-south fashion. Broad Street is the street's name in lieu of 14th street. Broad Street intersects Market Street at the center of Philadelphia's City Hall , which is often viewed as the center of Philadelphia.

Under Broad Street runs the Broad Street Line , which serves hundreds of thousands of people a day. Distinguished by its orange cars, it starts at Fern Rock in the northern reaches of Philadelphia and extends all the way down to the south end of Philadelphia at Pattison Avenue.

Broad Street is home to many of Philadelphia's cultural landmarks. Broad Street in between Spruce Street and Market Street is called the Avenue Of The Arts . Many galleries, as well as the Academy Of Music and the Kimmel Center are located here on Broad Street. Numerous schools can be found on Broad Street, including Temple University .

Near its south end in South Philadelphia is the Philadelphia Sports Complex, which is home to Citizens Bank Park , Lincoln Financial Field , the Wachovia Spectrum and the Wachovia Center . Once there but now gone were JFK Stadium and Veterans Stadium .

Going north of Center City , Broad Street turns into the center of the African-American communities of North Philadelphia . After it finally leaves the city limits, Broad Street turns into Old York Road, which is an equally important avenue that features many stores for the suburbs. Broad Street also forms part of Route 611 .

Despite being one of the busiest avenues in the city, every year Broad Street is shut down for the annual Broad Street Run, a 10 mile race. The section of Broad Street from approximately Oregon Avenue to City Hall , in South Philadelphia and Center City , is also the traditional location of the Mummers Parade on January 1 .
