''Breathe'' is a song by the British Progressive Rock band Pink Floyd . It was released on the '' Dark Side Of The Moon '' album in 1973 . COMPOSITION The song is moderately loud in tone and dynamics. It is approximately 2 minutes, 59 seconds in length. It is the first song on the album with lyrics, and is preceded by screaming at the end of the song "Speak to Me." It consists of an older man speaking to a newborn infant. Telling it to breathe, he then proceeds to tell him to dedicate his life to labor, as in the line "Run, rabbit, run / Dig that hole / Forget the sun." However, the song clearly means not to support this life of pointless exertion but to criticize it, as is demonstrated through the singer's tone and through the choice of such an example as digging holes as the labor to dedicate his life too. The title "Breathe" may refer either to the man's brief concession to the baby's need to prepare himself for the world, or it may refer to the need for everyone to take a break from digging those holes and simply breathe. ALBUM ''Breathe'' is the second track of the album ''Dark Side of the Moon'', positioned after '' Speak To Me '' and before ''On the Run''. The sound effects of this song were extremly hard to do because there were no computers to do the effects on so they used tapes and just overlapped each effect. NOTES |
