HISTORY

The Brakspear brewery dates back to 1799 when WH Brakspear bought a brewery on Bell Street, Henley. The Brakspear family were distantly related to Nicholas Breakspear who became Pope Adrian IV in 1154 - the only Englishman to become Pope. In 1812 the brewery moved to the attractive Thames-side location on New Street.
On 17th October 2002 the brewery ceased production and closed. The site was then sold off and converted into luxury housing.

The brewing company Refresh UK (also the owner of Wychwood ) secured a licence to produce beer under the Brakspear brand the same year.

The company now concentrates on maintaining and expanding their growing pub estate. The Brakspear Pub Group now has 102 pubs in the South East of England.
