DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 2,336 people, 979 households, and 550 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 859.0/km&2 (2,230.0/mi&2). There were 1,114 housing units at an average density of 409.6/km&2 (1,063.4/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.25% White , 0.34% African American , 2.87% Native American , 0.39% Asian , 0.09% from Other Races , and 1.07% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.98% of the population.

There were 979 households out of which 24.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% were Married Couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.8% were non-families. 41.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.10 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the city the population was spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 18.9% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 27.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $29,022, and the median income for a family was $40,938. Males had a median income of $29,286 versus $20,089 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $16,530. There were 5.4% of families and 10.9% of the population living below the Poverty Line , including 16.0% of under eighteens and 9.1% of those over 64.
