Bordon (also known as "Bordon and Whitehill" if the adjourning village to the south is included) is a small Town in East Hampshire , several miles north of Petersfield along the A325 (the Greatham - Farnham road), in south England . The busy A325 passes through the town. Whitehill is presumably named after the hill that greats motorists on the main road as they enter the village from the south. Part of Bordon is in the parish of Headley . There is a rail-link to Liphook station, and Stagecoach bus 18 passes through the town on the way from Haslemere to Farnham and Aldershot . Historically, the town was an important army base with a railway station--as is nearby Aldershot , especially during World War II , when the railway line was used to transport personnel to the coast. The Longmoor Army Ranges , a large forest with tracks and firing ranges, is south of the town. The perimeter track, especially between Greatham and Whitehill, used permisively by walkers. The track is also used unofficially by cyclists to avoid the busy, narrow A325--which the track runs roughly parallell to. Many pavements next to the A325 in Bordon and Whitehill and in other busy roads nearby have been widened and designated cycle-paths, and many pavements not officially cycle-paths are routinely ridden on by cyclists avoiding mixing with the heavily-trafficked main road. This can create ambiguity at junctions however, and encourages cyclists to cross as pedestrians and disregard roundabouts and traffic lights. Many B-roads (minor roads) to adjourning villages such as Lindford are also very busy. The town has several shops spread out over the area but no central location such as a high street since the town was historically an army camp and toll road to Farnham not a market-town like nearby Petersfield , Alton and Farnham . The town has a Tesco supermarket, a One Stop convenience store, a small shopping centre, a few petrol stations, a tatoo parlour and various takeaway and video rental outlets. |
