They occasionally crossed the border into Kansas to vote, especially in favor of the " Lecompton Constitution " (a proposed State Constitution , drafted by a Constitutional Convention of dubious validity, that allowed slavery). On May 21 , 1856, "border ruffians" in conjunction with pro-slavery Kansas settlers and the officers of the fraudulently-elected territorial legislature, famously attacked the town of Lawrence, Kansas . Seven years later, during the Civil War (after Kansas had been admitted as a non-slave state), Lawrence was attacked again and razed entirely on August 21 , 1863 by William Quantrill 's raiders (sometimes also called "border ruffians"), as depicted dramatically in Ang Lee 's film '' Ride With The Devil ''.
