Information About

Blackfriars Station

NATIONAL RAIL

The National Rail station has both through platforms and terminal platforms.

Services

The through platforms are served by First Capital Connect trains running north to south across London from Bedford and Luton in the north to Brighton in the south via London Bridge and the south west London suburbs around Sutton via Elephant & Castle .

The terminal platforms are used by Southeastern services to Orpington via Denmark Hill and occasional peak-only services via Herne Hill .

History

The original Blackfriars station was opened in 1864 , on the south bank of the River Thames . It closed in 1886 after the opening of Blackfriars Bridge , and a new station, then called ''St Paul's'' opened on the north bank. It was renamed to Blackfriars station in 1937 .

Northbound services used to go to Holborn Viaduct Station , but now go to City Thameslink Station .

LONDON UNDERGROUND

The London Underground station is on the Circle and District lines, between Temple and Mansion House .

The Cambridge Buskers started here.

RIVER

The station is on the north bank of the River Thames , near Blackfriars Bridge , and is adjacent to London River Services ' Blackfriars Pier. The platforms for the Thameslink rail services extend out onto the Blackfriars Railway Bridge and are thus over the river.
