Birmingham Yardley, historically a rare 3 way marginal, swung to the Liberal Democrats, who gained their first seat in Birmingham. Many people consider the swing due to the large proportion of Kashmiri residents - who swung straight from Labour to Lib Dem (re Iraq). Indeed this swing pattern amongst Kashmiri voters was replicated across Birmingham.
Previously a 3-way marginal, in recent years the Conservative vote has collapsed, creating a rare Labour/Lib Dem Marginal. Despite an energetic campaign from Labour Candidate Jayne Innes, the Labour Paty failed to hold onto the seat in the absence of Rt Hon Estelle Morris (now Baroness Morris of Yardley. Baroness Morris of Yardley first won the seat for Labour in 1992 with a majority of less than 180 votes. It was 4th time lucky for Lib Dem John Hemming.
Mr Hemming's subsequent high profile marital and paternity problems make the seat a prime target for Labour at the next general election.
