The Town of Berkshire is in the northeast part of the county.


HISTORY

The first settlers arrived around 1701.
The town was established in 1808 from the Town Of Union while in Broome County. In 1822 Berkshire was made part of Tioga County.


GEOGRAPHY

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 78.3 Km&2 (30.2 Mi&2 ). 78.2 km&2 (30.2 mi&2) of it is land and 0.03% is water.

The east town line of Berkshire is the border of Broome County , New York, and part of the west town line is the border of Tompkins County , New York.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 1,366 people, 506 households, and 384 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 17.5/km&2 (45.2/mi&2). There were 561 housing units at an average density of 7.2/km&2 (18.6/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.76% White , 0.37% African American , 0.44% Native American , 0.07% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.00% from Other Races , and 0.37% from two or more races. 0.37% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 506 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.5% were Married Couples living together, 7.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.07.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 103.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $37,625, and the median income for a family was $43,676. Males had a median income of $29,620 versus $22,865 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $16,735. 11.4% of the population and 6.5% of families were below the Poverty Line . 16.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.0% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.


COMMUNITIES AND LOCATIONS IN BERKSHIRE

  • Berkshire -- The Hamlet of Berkshire is located where Routes 8, 10, and 38 converge. The community is in the center of the town and was first settled around 1795.

  • East Berkshire -- A hamlet east of Berkshire village on Route 10.

  • Wilson Creek -- A hamlet in the southeast part of the town and the name of a stream that flows past the community.
