Benton County is a County located in the U.S. State of Indiana . As of 2000 , the population is 9,421. The County Seat is Fowler 6 . GEOGRAPHY According to the U.S. Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 1,053 Km&2 (406 Mi&2 ). 1,052 km&2 (406 mi&2) of it is land and 0 km&2 (0 mi&2) of it is water. HISTORY Benton County was formed in 1840. It is named for Thomas H. Benton , U.S. Senator from Missouri . DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 9,421 people, 3,558 households, and 2,547 families residing in the county. The Population Density was 9/km&2 (23/mi&2). There were 3,818 housing units at an average density of 4/km&2 (9/mi&2). The racial makeup of the county was 96.90% White , 0.21% Black or African American , 0.14% Native American , 0.08% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 1.28% from Other Races , and 1.38% from two or more races. 2.60% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 3,558 households out of which 35.20% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.50% were Married Couples living together, 8.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% were non-families. 24.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.09. In the county the population was spread out with 27.90% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 21.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.10 males. The median income for a household in the county was $39,813, and the median income for a family was $46,869. Males had a median income of $30,592 versus $22,169 for females. The Per Capita Income for the county was $17,220. 5.50% of the population and 3.50% of families were below the Poverty Line . 6.00% of those under the age of 18 and 4.50% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
