The son of an industrialist, Benjamin Hall , he became MP for Monmouth in 1832 and held the seat for five years. He was instrumental in the passing of the Truck Act in 1831. He was created a baronet in 1838 , and appointed Commissioner for Works in 1855. In this post, he ordered the casting of the bell nicknamed Big Ben (possibly in his honour) in 1856 . It now hangs in The Clock Tower of the Palace Of Westminster in London . Through his wife, Lady Llanover , Hall inherited the Llanover estate in Monmouthshire , and in 1859 was created Baron Llanover. EXTERNAL LINKS |
