Belleville is a Township located in Essex County , New Jersey . As of the United States 2000 Census , the township had a total population of 35,928.


GEOGRAPHY

Belleville is located at 40°47'37" North, 74°9'41" West (40.793500, -74.161448).

According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 8.8 Km&2 (3.4 Mi&2 ). 8.7 km&2 (3.3 mi&2) of it is land and 0.2 km&2 (0.1 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 2.05% water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 35,928 people, 13,731 households, and 9,089 families residing in the township. The Population Density was 4,153.3/km&2 (10,744.3/mi&2). There were 14,144 housing units at an average density of 1,635.0/km&2 (4,229.8/mi&2). The racial makeup of the township was 69.44% White , 5.36% African American , 0.17% Native American , 11.31% Asian , 0.07% Pacific Islander , 9.83% from Other Races , and 3.82% from two or more races. 23.68% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 13,731 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% were Married Couples living together, 13.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% were non-families. 27.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.23.

In the township the population was spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 33.9% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $48,576, and the median income for a family was $55,212. Males had a median income of $38,074 versus $31,729 for females. The Per Capita Income for the township was $22,093. 8.2% of the population and 6.3% of families were below the Poverty Line . 10.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

The members of the Belleville Township Council are Mayor Jerry Digori, Deputy Mayor Louis Pallante, Marie Strumolo Burke Kevin G. Kennedy, John Notari, George Ritacco and Steven Rovell.

Belleville is in the Eighth Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 28th Legislative District.
