Batticaloa(මඩකලපුව In Sinhala , மட்டக்களப்பு In Tamil ) is the provincial capital of the eastern province of Sri Lanka but now both northern and eastern provinces merged and Trincomalee has been declared as the provincial capital of north -East province. It is on the east coast, 314 Km from Colombo . The population of 86,742 consists mainly of Tamils and Moors, with a minority Sinhalese population. The town is claimed by the LTTE as part of their Tamil Homeland, Eelam. The town was one of the worst hit area from the Tsunami of Dec 26, 2004. The water rose upto 4.7 meters within 90 minutes from beginning of the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake .

Eastern University Of Sri Lanka is located in Batticaloa, it's a significant educational institute in whole eastern province of Sri Lanka.

Batticaloa is the native place of Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan, better known as Karuna Amman , a former LTTE commander who broke away from the main organisation in 2004 and currently operates his own paramilitary group, the Tamileela Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal , or People's Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (TMVP).


ETYMOLOGY

Similar to many placenames in Sri Lanka, Batticaloa is the anglicised version of the Sinhalese placename "Mada Kalapuwa" meaning "Muddy Lagoon". Only in English medium the term "Batticaloa" is used. The Sinhalese always refered to this place as "Mada Kalapuwa". The Tamils use the tamilised version "Matta Kalappu" (which has no meaning in Tamil).
